Sofala Newsletter: Wildlife Extravaganza

August 28, 2008

What a fantastic turnout at the 2008 Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza. Sofala Safaris would like to thank each one of you who came by our booth and talked about visiting and hunting in South Africa. A hunt in in Africa is most certainly one of the biggest dreams for many hunters and as you know, we are in the business of helping you make that dream come true. With our great prices and the variety of animals you can hunt, it is truly hard to beat hunting with Sofala Safaris. The personal touch, all inclusive packages, true family environment and the aura of hunting in the "dark continent" make Sofala Safaris the obvious choice for your African Safari.

Newsletter Focus: "The poor man's buffalo"

If there is one animal that can stay on its feet longer than most hunters, it is the Blue Wildebeest. This larger plains game specie (around 500 lbs) often survives shots that seem to define the term "perfect shot placement." I have witnessed too many great escapes by these beasts of the bush, unable to fully understand why so many Wildebeest can keep running when most of the other big game species would be long gone.
What hunters have to keep in mind is that the Wildebeest's neck is very wide and the common error is to place the shot too high in the shoulder since the shoulder is not clearly visible because of the wide neck. It is very important to discuss shot placement with your Professional Hunter before you take on a Blue Wildebeest. Most would agree that the perfect shot on this animal is through the shoulder, right above the upper legs on the front shoulder.
Another important consideration is to make sure you wait for a while (at least 10 minutes) after the trigger squeeze before you approach the animal. To walk up on a wounded wildebeest is asking for trouble. First, Wildebeest do not hesitate to attack when wounded; second, walking up on a wounded Wildebeest is like giving it an adrenaline injection.
With a price tag around $900 the Blue Wildebeest is literally thousands of dollars less than a Cape Buffalo, yet provides one of the most exciting hunts outside the Big 5, hence the label "poor man's buffalo." The fight a Wildebeest puts up is something every hunter will remember for the rest of his or her life. Contact us today for more information about plains game species such as the Blue Wildebeest - Sofala provides fantastic hunts with either rifle or bow.
